The 400 ft high Centre Point building in the heart of London's West End was host to Steves Guinness World Record Attempt on September 4th 2004.

A specially created arm was constructed at the top of the building to suspend Steve 20ft out from the building's face and 400ft from the pavement below.

The whole event was filmed by Granada Television as the opening record to be shown on the Guinness World Record 50th Anniversary Television Show, screened on the 11th September 2004 on ITV1 with around 6 million viewers.

Steve abseiled into the studio on live television at the top of the show to be greeted by the presenter Jamie Theakston.

On the way down

The traffic came to a standstill as a huge crowd of over 1000 people gathered at the junction of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road to watch as Steve abseiled off to set a new world record.

A gust of wind caught Steve as he set off, hurtling towards the ground.

Although a specially constructed safety box rig was directly below Steve, the wind was strong enough to blow him from over this landing zone. Due to constraints of space and time the rig was only designed to catch Steve in the event of a 'hang up' or snag.

A new World Record in the making

Fortunately Steve has spent years abseiling from buildings, mountains, rock faces and helicopters. Armed with this experience Steve was able to stop himself from a full speed descent, just inches from the pavement below to set a new world record of 8.9 seconds for 100 metres (330ft).
